A year later...the current state of our democracy and special interests.

Believe me, I am quite sure that there have been plenty of rants since that first one over a year ago but I guess I never decided to put them down here.

I'm thinking that with the upcoming election, and everyone putting their own two cents in, I might as well cough up my own and add to the pot.

I don't think either of these two guys are the answer, however, I am sure as time goes on, one will stand out for me - though maybe moreso because the other is just objectionable.

That being said, I find myself often concerned about the current state of democracy in our country. I have a very different perspective from most - and that perspective comes from a lot of reading and research about the founding of our nation.

It's interesting to me that the most complain about the special interest groups and claim that they are the source of all evil for what's going on today. However, if you have knowledge of the formations of government and in particular, ours, competing special interests are one of the essential components to the balance of powers we speak of so fondly when we talk about our government. The larger a democracy grows the more special interests will arise - be they commercial, local, regional, etc. It is through these interests that balances are kept and deals made in order to keep the wheels of government moving so that things get done for all and one does not drive the agenda on their own.

The question we should all be considering is wether or not our leaders are as the founders expected them to be. Disinterested men of talent and character who because of their disinterestedness act as public servants in the interest of the people. Have our congressmen and senators locally and nationally reached a state of corruption equal to that of England's Parliament prior to the 1760's?

Do we even consider or look for the encroachments of power upon liberty or have we become too complacent and assume that these things could never happen here. Beware of demagogues who prey upon common fears - nuclear proliferation, a slow economy. Men who wish to extend their own grip on power (Bloomberg). Men who tell you things are bad and change is needed. You must see these things for yourself. All power, of all three branches of representatives derives from the people - but the people are asleep. Wake up!
